Engineering & Design 2 (#0798)

Division: Upper School
Grades Offered: 9, 10, 11, 12
Course Type: Core
Course Length: 1 Semester
Department: Innovations and Design

In this course students implement concepts learned in Engineering and Design I to produce a working product based on their interests. Students will research current products before they propose a product that does not infringe on current intellectual property and patents. They will propose a product design and development plan that follows human-centered design, a budget, timeline, and feedback from potential customers. Students are encouraged, but not required, to seek an outside community-based need that aligns with their interests and capabilities for an innovative product. Once the proposal is accepted, students will go through the new product introduction process to design and develop a working and marketable product that aligns with the design requirements and expectations. Throughout the process, students will communicate with their peers, potential customers, as well as a steering committee, affording the students several opportunities to practice effective and professional communication skills. This course can be taken multiple times, depending on the complexity of the project.
