2021 Vocabulary Parade

Each year for the past 14 years at Parker School, Grade 5 teacher Kristi Weiser has read the book Miss Allanius by Debra Fraiser to her class. The story is about a fifth-grade class and a vocabulary disaster they have with the misunderstanding of the word miscellaneous. The students are then asked to pick one of their vocabulary words they’ve had this year and dress up in a costume that represents the word without telling the other students what their word is. On the day of the Vocabulary Parade, the students come to school in their costumes, parade around for the fifth-grade class, and guess what word each other’s costumes represent. Later in the day, during the Vocabulary Parade, they present for the lower school, sharing their costumes, a definition of the word, and a silly sentence using their word and plenty of alliteration. The day revolves around vocabulary activities and is loads of fun.
