Ms. Buscher came to Parker in 2007, and under her oversight, the visual arts program has expanded and thrived. She created Parker’s highly successful AP studio art program, which enjoys both high participation and outstanding pass rates, aiding students in their admission to colleges and art schools. She oversaw the quadrupling in size of the Parker chapter of National Art Honor Society (NAHS), a vibrant club which holds exhibitions, uses art to raise awareness of important issues and runs Art Nights, where students gather as artists to create and celebrate. Ms. Buscher’s students have participated in, placed in and won numerous community, island, state and national competitions, including NAEA national awards, Scholastic Art awards and a first place, second place and several finalists in the Congressional arts awards. “I believe that true learning happens when students are interested and engaged,” she says, “My goal as a teacher is to help students recognize themselves as artists first and students second; I am fully committed to helping students discover their talents and thrive.” A fourth generation kama‘aina, Ms. Buscher graduated from Hawaii Preparatory Academy and earned a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and journalism from Beloit College in 1991, placing as a finalist in the prestigious Ruth Lily National Poetry Competition that same year. In 2002 she received a Master of Fine Arts in ceramics from San Francisco State University. Before coming to Parker, she exhibited her work locally and nationally.
