In addition to keeping the campus beautifully landscaped and maintained and the school buildings running smoothly, handling all manner of construction and refurbishing, and running the physical set-up of all major campus events, Eric Sills is also valued by the Parker ‘ohana as an important teacher in everyday situations. An eight-year member of the ironworker’s union, Mr. Sills says he has worked at Parker School since 1997 because of the importance of education. “The way I was raised, most of my education was outside the classroom. We were always taught to love everyone, to help the person in need, to open your arms and your heart, and lend a hand wherever needed.” This message has been imparted to Parker School students, who readily line up behind “Uncle Eric” to put up an event tent or move picnic tables for the annual lua’au and who have repeatedly voted him “Mr. Aloha” in the annual yearbook poll. A graduate of Honoka’a High who has lived in Waimea for most of his life, Mr. Sills received his Hawaiian Lifestyles Certificate from Hawaii Community College. His wife, “Kumu Jackie,” teaches kindergarten at the Parker Lower School. Eric and Jackie have four daughters, two of whom are Parker School graduates, and four grandchildren, one of whom attends Parker Lower School, making them the first family to send three generations to Parker.
