The current Parker School paddling program began as a promise to coach Beanie Heen, who passed away suddenly after beginning to coach the team in 2010. In his memory, a team of coaches have worked together to promote athleticism and a love for the sport. The coaches are a collective group of paddlers: Michael Nearman, Pepper Chong, Toby Wilkinson, Mike Akau, Cindy Chong, Scott Hendricks, Kealoha Nearman, and many more skilled community members sharing their gifts with our students. This coaching team has been a winning formula: In the time they’ve been working together, Parker paddlers have repeatedly qualified for State; the mixed varsity team won the BIIF championship in 2012; and the team placed in the top ten varsity crews in the state and the top two on the Big Island in 2012, 2013 & 2014. More information on Coach Kealoha can be found in her employee bio.
