Lower School Arts

The lower school fine arts program introduces students to a comprehensive array of visual, performing and cultural arts.

The visual arts curriculum builds on drawing, painting and sculptural skills while introducing students to artists from history and basic art theory. Art projects are frequently timed to support cross-curricular learning between art and subject area classes. Student work is showcased in the classrooms and also at the lower school arts showcase in the spring.

The performing arts curriculum includes music appreciation, singing and a variety of instruments. Students showcase their skills at the Winter Holiday Concert. The lower school also offers an after-school choral program.

The Hawaiian cultural arts program utilizes a rich curriculum which incorporates chanting, singing, instruments, hula and printmaking on student kihei, or sashes. This yearlong program culminates in the May Day performance each year.

May Day

May Day is an annual tradition in the lower school. Students work under the direction of our kumu hula, or teacher of Hawaiian storytelling and dance, learning the Hawaiian language and culture. Each year a theme is chosen to guide discussions and learning. The students are introduced to traditional Hawaiian musical instruments, which are often incorporated into the May Day performance. Students work throughout the year preparing for this annual event that takes place the first week in May.

Chorus

The Parker School chorus is an after-school club available to students in grades four through six. Our chorus meets once each week and focuses on creating a variety of singing opportunities. We employ a student-centered approach to learning where students are encouraged to take leadership roles. The chorus works both as a whole ensemble and in small groups to sing a wide variety of choral music. Students learn the elements of music, proper vocal techniques, beginning music reading skills, unison singing, and two-part harmony. The overall goal is to provide a positive musical experience through community building and group work leading to performance and reflection.
